What are the side effects of black tea?

Drinking black tea in moderation is generally safe for most people, but there is uncertainty about what amount is right. Supplement ingredients and quality can vary greatly. This makes it difficult to determine a standard dosage.

Drinking excessive amounts of black tea (more than four or five cups a day) can lead to health problems. This is mostly due to caffeine-related side effects. Possible side effects of high black tea consumption may include:

Anxiety and sleep problems
Breathing faster
Headache
Increased urination
Irregular heartbeat
Nausea and vomiting
Irritability and restlessness
Ringing in the ears
Tremors
Hypertension
Anemia

Combining black tea with other types of caffeine or a product called ephedra (a type of shrub that grows in arid regions) can be very dangerous. Some of the problems it can cause include:

Irritability
Increased blood pressure
Heart rate changes
Shifts
Fainting

Black tea or black tea supplements can interact with other medications and supplements you are taking. Some medications can also cause caffeine to stay in your body longer than usual. It is important for your health to talk to your doctor to find out if any medication you are taking has this effect.

Note: Never mix or drink any tea whose ingredients you don't know.
